Real Madrid has secured a place at the top of the La Liga with 47 points after defeating Levante with Nistelrooy's two late goals.
Although a staggering 36 points separated Bernd Schuster's side from Levante before the Sunday kick-off, each team's display on the pitch was not much different until the Dutchman stole the show.
The Dutch striker put Real ahead in the 76th minute of the game from the penalty spot before adding a second goal two minutes later.
With his two goals against Levante, Nistelrooy is now second in the scorer chart with 11 goals, just one behind Sevilla's Luis Fabiano.
"It was hard work but we got the win and it will be vital for us come the end of the season," said Real boss Bernd Schuster.
After thrashing Real Murcia 4-0 on Saturday, rival Barcelona stands seven points behind Real Madrid in the La Liga.
