Monday, March 31, 2008
Real Madrid moved six points clear at the top of La Liga after scoring a 3-1 win over Sevilla at the Bernabeu.
Gabriel Heinze, Real defender, headed the home side in front early on before striker Raul restored the lead just before the break, a minute after Frederic Kanoute had equalised for Sevilla.
Gonzalo Higuain sealed a relatively comfortable victory in the second half, to leave the champions on 65 points, six ahead of Villarreal on 59 with eight games left in the season.
Barcelona slipped down to third with 58 points after squandering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 away to Real Betis on Saturday.
Heinze's first league goal for Real put the hosts ahead in the seventh minute only for Kanoute to level the scores on 37 minutes.
However, captain Raul scored his 290th goal for Real to make him the club's joint second all-time top-scorer along with Carlos Alonso Santillana, as he chases Alfredo di Stefano's mark of 307.
"It was a complete game from my team from defence right through to the attack."
Higuain added a third as Real ended a sequence of two successive league defeats.
"It was a complete game from my team from defence right through to the attack," Bernd Schuster, Real coach, said.
"Everyone played to their top level tonight and for that reason I don't want to single out individuals for praise.
"After the bad luck against Valencia we have won an important game and we just have to continue what we are doing to win the title and not look back."
