A second-half hat-trick by Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid to a superb 7-0 win over Málaga and closed the hole on Barcelona to seven points again.
Jose Mourinho's side maintained their 100% home record with their largest win of the season.
First-half goals from Karim Benzema, Angel di Maria and Marcelo put Real into a commanding lead at the Bernabeu, the perfect response to Barcelona's midweek win over Valencia.
Ronaldo came alight after half-time bringing his season goal tally to 27, but will now be out of action for ten days after pulling muscles in his leg.
At the other end of the table Almeria stayed firmly rooted to the bottom of the Primera Liga after their 1-1 draw with 10-man Racing Santander.
Racing played almost three quarters of the match with only ten men after Brazilian defender Henrique was sent off after 17 minutes for pulling down Piatti, but Almería were unable to capitalise on their numerical virtue.
Racing in the meantime stretched their unbeaten run to six league games, with new coach Marcelino guiding the club away from the relegation zone and but as numerous as 12th position.
